All About Online Talk Therapy

Teletherapy, Online Talk Therapy, Online Mental Health Counseling or Tele-mental Health, is a way to receive mental health counseling remotely through a secure platform:

  • Video sessions: A counselor & client interact in real time via video conferencing
  • Online apps: A counselor & client use a downloaded app to connect
  • Phone calls: A counselor & client meet over the phone


 Teletherapy can be beneficial for people who have difficulty accessing in-person therapy due to: geographic location, cost of childcare, physical disabilities, chronic illness, & lack of transportation. To ensure patient privacy, Teletherapy services are HIPAA-compliant & use virtual communication that protects patient privacy. 


 Patients can interact with their therapists the same way they do during in-person sessions, just from a distance. 

Tips For Teletherapy Sessions

  • Protect your privacy by choosing a safe, secure, private location where no one else can hear your conversation.
  • Find a spot free of distractions to help you focus on the session. This could be in your home, car, or other private office.
  • Double check your internet or phone connection to ensure you don’t have technical difficulties during your session.
  • Wearing headphones may help block out background noise & make the interaction easier and feel more private.
  • Keep a notebook handy if you want to take notes or jot down questions or notes for later.
  • Make a list of questions for your therapist about how the talk therapy or online mental health counseling will work, what to expect in each session, or what happens if you lose connectivity.
  • Try to keep a sense of humor — there’s often a learning curve to teletherapy services for both therapist & client.

Is Teletherapy Effective For All Mental Health Challenges?


Online mental health counseling is an effective resource for most mental health challenges that would also benefit from in-person support. This includes:

  • depression
  • anxiety
  • chronic stress & burnout
  • relationship problems
  • grief & mourning
  • traumatic experiences
  • life changes

EMDR is NOT available via Talk Therapy .
